Philippine Navy (PN) is preparing for contingency plan in case other countries will react aggressively once the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) hand down a ruling on July 12, 2016.
According to a military source in Camp Aguinaldo, the postponement scheduled visit of BRP Ramon Alcaraz (FF 16) in Vietnam is indeed part of the Navy’s contingency on PCA ruling.
“As a military you are always ready for contingency. Of course you expect for the best but we don’t know if the decision would be favorable. Our allies may react aggressively or whatever way, either in Scarborough or our areas at Kalayaan Island Group especially LT-57 (BRP Sierra Madre). So in case of emergency, our assets there are ready,” the source said, as quoted by Inquirer.net.
The send-off ceremony for the BRP Ramon Alcaraz and her AgustaWestland AW-109 helicopter, which was earlier scheduled for July 8 at Manila’s South Harbor, was ordered postponed by PN on Wednesday.
“We regret to inform you of the postponement of the scheduled send-off ceremony for BRP Ramon Alcaraz due to unavoidable circumstances and the change of the operational demand of the said Philippine Navy vessel,” PN spokesperson Capt. Lued Lincuna said.
Meanwhile, China’s foreign minister told U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday that United States should stick to its promises not to take sides in the dispute.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the United States should “speak and act cautiously, and take no actions that harm China’s sovereignty and security interests.”
Wang repeated China’s rejection of the case, saying the court had no jurisdiction.
“The farce of the arbitration court should come to an end,” he said.
