French President Emmanuel Macron has announced the official name of the French Navy’s next-generation aircraft carrier: France Libre.
The name refers to Free France, the government-in-exile led by Charles de Gaulle during World War II, which opposed Nazi Germany and the Vichy regime while coordinating the French Resistance.
The future carrier will be nuclear-powered, using two reactors, and is designed to operate advanced stealth fighters and unmanned systems. The ship will be equipped with three EMALS catapults, measure about 319 meters in length, and have an estimated displacement of around 80,000 tons.
