WHAT an incredible achievement by South African double amputee 24-year-old Oscar Pistorius (pic) despite the many odds stacked against him.
Pistorius popularly known as the “Blade Runner” because he runs with carbon fibre prosthetic running blades, clocked an impressive 45.07 seconds in Lignano, Italy to record a time inside the London Olympics and World Championship qualifying time.
Pistorius competed in a number of athletic meets despite touching 45 seconds plus, which was not good enough to qualify.
His achievement was more dramatic as his qualifying time was recorded on the final day of eligibility for the South African team.
His persistence and power of self belief finally paid off. Pistorius remarked that “it was a dream race”.
Pistorius, a multiple paralympic gold medallist, sought to compete in the World Championships and Olympics but faced challenges.
The Court of Arbitration for Sports gave him a chance in 2008 when it ruled in his favour after a long legal battle with the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) over the use of his running blades which give him unfair advantage.
One lesson athletes and fans can learn from this extraordinary athlete is his inner resources and his incredible power.
Pistorius has amazing untapped talent and ability that can enable him to realise his dream of competing in the World Championship which begins on Aug 27 in Daegu, South Korea and the 2012 London Olympics.
We take our hats off to Pistorius for no Malaysian athlete has ever run below 46 seconds in the 400 metres.
Our National Athletics Championship is in Kangar, Perlis this weekend.
Brian Tracy in his book Unleash Your Mental Powers says: “The potential of the average person is like a huge ocean unsailed, a new continent unexplored, a world of possibilities waiting to be released and channelled toward some great good.”
